I’m Training for a Half Marathon!

30 Oct

Less than a year ago, I would have laughed if you suggested that I would be training for a half marathon today. Half of an entire marathon, or 13.1 miles, would have seemed impossible to me back then, but I’m on the right track to tackle the distance and even come in under two hours, if all goes well. I decided to create this post because I’ve had a lot of “how did you do it?” or “I could never do that” questions and comments. These tips can help you train for your own 13.1 mile race. After all, if I can do it, then so can you!

Assess Your Starting Point
The first thing I did once I set my mind to completing the full 13.1 miles was figure out what I could already do. This spring, I was shocked to discover that just 30 seconds of running left me out of breath and in need of a walk break. Knowing that wasn’t discouraging, as it gave me a base and something to improve upon.

Get an App to Help You Improve
Since I wasn’t a long-time runner, I needed an app that could help keep me on track and motivate my weight loss. The Couch to 5k App, or C25K, had me running and walking in intervals three or four times each week. At the end of the 10 week plan, I could run an entire 5k, or 3.1 miles, without needing a walk break. After completing C25K, I moved onto C210K, which I’ll complete by the middle of November.

Participate in Shorter Races Along the Way
After finishing the C25K, I put my hard work to the test with a 5k race in Las Vegas. Before my full 13.1 mile race, I’ll also participate in a longer race called the 12k Turkey Trot in Las Vegas. I’m nervous to tackle 12k, or roughly 7.5 miles, but I need that time so that I can be put in the right corral for my upcoming half marathon. Once I complete that race, I will have run the furthest distance that I’ve ever run in my entire life.

Schedule Your 13.1 Months in Advance
The culmination of all my training will be the Tinkerbell 1/2 Marathon, which takes places in Disneyland. Knowing that I have this race ahead of me helps me stick to my training, which I know will be tough to handle over the holidays. The race is held on Mother’s Day, an extra special date to me since my son and husband will be at Disneyland cheering me across the finish line. I got this fitness journey started after having my little boy and knowing that I am his role model, so seeing him at the end will be quite the special moment for me. Since I started running and cross-training, I’ve lost nearly 90 pounds (80 of which I gained during my pregnancy). This race will be my moment to show the world what I’m capable of and make me and my family proud!

Get Your Fitness On!

11 Nov

Now that I’m all adjusted to my brand new normal, I am really focused on two of my major passions: fitness and nutrition. With my full time job that keeps me very busy and my new larger family, I admit I sometimes find it hard to make time for workouts and prepping enough healthy meals. However, I’m determined to get back into my old clothes. This is the next step in my fitness journey – lose the baby weight.

During pregnancy, I gained about 70 pounds (!!!), so now it’s about shedding the extra weight. Though occasionally long work hours and lack of sleep tempt me to skip, I try to work out at least three times a week if not more. I’m proud to say I have been pretty good about this when I wasn’t healing my knee injury these past three weeks. I took some time off to heal (doctor’s orders) and stepped back in the gym today!

I am following a weight lifting program for my workouts called SimplyShredded. I was also going to kickboxing classes at I Love Kickboxing – this is my favorite! Unfortunately, that just happens to be when I injured my knee and my doctor recommended only light resistance on a stationary bike for workouts. Let’s just say I have a tendency not to listen to my doctor’s orders so these past few weeks have been hard to swallow. Kickboxing is just way too fun to miss out on!

I am also paying attention to my nutrition. I am well aware of how important a good nutrition plan is to my weight loss. I try to be careful with my gluten intake as I am gluten sensitive, but sometimes I am not as good about it as I should be. All the delicious food has gluten! A compromise I have found to deal with my cravings are Quest Nutrition sour crean and onion chips. They are gluten free, high in protein (21g), and low in carbs (5g). They cure my cravings for chips and still leave give me the protein that my body needs.

I have recently discovered IIFYM. IIFYM stands for “if it fits your macros”. This basically means that I track my protein, carbs, and fat. I had to train myself to forget all the crazy stuff I thought I knew about weight loss and dieting. The overall idea with IIFYM is that if I eat less calories than my body requires (while getting the right amount of protein, carbs, and fat that my body requires to function) I will lose weight at a steady rate. There are no off-limit foods, there are no requirements that I eat small meals throughout the day or that I absolutely cannot miss breakfast. All I have to do is stay within my daily macros and I will lose weight! The first week alone, I lost 4 lbs. I’d say that’s progress.

Overall, I am really excited about the start of my journey. I can’t wait to have that glow of health and well-being! Even though my time is limited and I’m not perfect about following all of my rules all the time, I am still making progress through diet and exercise, and that’s what matters. To new moms everywhere and those starting on their own fitness journeys, we can do this!

Life Is Good!

4 Nov

To clear up any rumors… My recent absence has not been because I am a spy on assignment, even though I could totally rock that! And it’s not because I am busy taking over the world; if I wanted to, it wouldn’t take this long. Lol. The truth is I have been very busy with the many changes in my life. It would be easy to say that my life is finally getting back to normal, but who am I kidding? My life will never be the same. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Having a baby changes EVERYTHING in your life! As many of you know, I had a baby boy in July and my world has become very much about him. I have been focused on my family and the normal daily to-do lists of any American Mom. As I mentioned before, my life will never be normal again but I like this “new normal”.

I have a healthy boy who is growing every day. It has been incredible seeing the changes and cherishing every moment. My bundle of joy is sleeping through the night which has been a nice change of pace. I can actually reacquaint myself with the back of my eyelids. Of course, having the best husband in the world has made this journey much more manageable. Thank you, hubby! And our final member of the family has been great with our baby boy. Our rescue dog, Captain, was curious at first but quickly accepted the situation. We are one big, happy family!!

My personal attention is most definitely on my health. I gained 70 lbs. during my pregnancy and I have been working hard on my fitness to lose that extra weight. I am not where I want to be but I am looking forward and not back. Of course, being able to sleep through the night has helped with exercising on a regular basis. I am determined to get back into my clothes and resume my active life. But primarily, I want to be healthy. That’s definitely my goal.

Eyebrows! Eyebrows! Eyebrows! Yes, I am still obsessed with eyebrows! I still have a passion to create perfectly shaped eyebrows. I am still practicing eyebrow waxing and makeup applications when I’m not working my regular job. That is still dear to my heart. I am taking appointments so get in touch with me if you need my assistance.

So to sum it all up… I AM BACK! Life is a lot different. Our family is a little larger. My husband is wonderful. I’m working my way back into shape. And of course, EYEBROWS…need I say more?

Thanks for walking this journey with me! I look forward to what is right around the bend!
